NHA Applauds House Natural Resources’ Advancement of ESA Reform Bill

Washington, D.C. — Malcolm Woolf, the President and CEO of the National Hydropower Association, released the following statement after the House Natural Resources Committee voted on Wednesday to advance the ESA Amendments Act (H.R. 1897) by a vote of 25 – 16, which enshrines long-overdue fixes to the Endangered Species Act (ESA).

“Hydropower and environmental stewardship go hand in hand, which is why we support this bill to ensure our industry can continue to meet growing energy demand responsibly. For too long, people have ignored congressional intent of the Endangered Species Act and used the law to slow down critical hydropower projects with detrimental and unnecessary delays. I thank Chairman Westerman and the House Natural Resources Committee for advancing this key legislation. I urge the House to pass this bill as soon as possible to help unleash hydropower’s full potential.”
