The Old Hickory Project, operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on the Cumberland River in Tennessee, is a run-of-river, multi-purpose water resources facility integrating hydropower generation with navigation. Located approximately 25 miles upstream of Nashville, the project reached full beneficial use in 1957 and today generates enough power to serve an estimated 29,000 homes annually while supporting approximately 3 million tons of commercial cargo per year.
Old Hickory is currently undergoing major rehabilitation, including recent replacements of the main power transformers and exciters, installation of a new intake gantry crane, and ongoing turbine-generator overhauls. Tour participants will have a unique opportunity to observe a unit disassembled and see the inner workings of a hydropower facility firsthand.
The guided tour is approximately 1.5 hours and involves climbing several flights of stairs. Not all areas are ADA accessible, though accommodations will be made where possible
Bus transportation will be provided to and from the hotel. Lunch will be on your own.
