National Hydropower Association’s (NHA) Clean Currents 2025 is coming to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, from October 14 – 17, 2025, and this ‘by the industry, for the industry’ event has a lot to offer the water power industry – information-packed sessions, networking opportunities, and exciting tours!

North American Forgemasters (NAF) and Ellwood Quality Steels (EQS) will host a tour opportunity at Clean Currents, providing 80 attendees with the opportunity to explore its western Pennsylvania forging facility in New Castle – the only fully integrated manufacturer of open die forgings in the Western Hemisphere.

The tour costs $65 per person, and attendees will leave for NAF from the David Lawrence Convention Center – the site of Clean Currents – on October 17, 2025, at 7:30 AM ET, returning to the pickup spot by 12:30 PM ET.

BACKGROUND

Steel has long been the backbone of western Pennsylvania’s economy, and today that heritage continues at North American Forgemasters (NAF) – a 50-50 joint venture between Scot Forge and Ellwood Group, Inc.; NAF stands as a testament to the region’s manufacturing strength.

Located about 50 minutes north of Pittsburgh in New Castle, Pennsylvania. NAF produces billet stock, solid and hollow preforms, and custom forged shapes. Ellwood Quality Steels melts ingots up to 444,000 pounds, which are transferred hot to NAF for processing on the 10,121T press into forgings as heavy as 330,000 pounds – the only integrated facility in North America capable of producing components at this scale.

Attached shaft, found in hydro applications, with a 75” major diameters and 58” diameter in the middle. It was 21’ long and weighed 150,000 lbs.

MODERN MANUFACTURING

For industries like hydropower, domestic manufacturing is more important than ever. NAF’s open die forge produces critical parts such as turbine and generator shafts, helping the U.S. supply chain meet the growing demand for renewable energy infrastructure.

During the tour, attendees will witness firsthand domestic manufacturing in action while gaining insight into both the proud steelmaking history of the region and its vital role in modern U.S. manufacturing.
